How To Cope With Trials And Tribulations

Ever since I became a Christian and learned about the spiritual war raging around us, I have become very aware of the part I am playing in it. At first, I realized that just being a Christian was enough for the devil to attack me, then I realized I simply needed to be a human being on earth. When I started this blog I realized that just talking about my testimony would bring attack, and when I started to come to terms with being a survivor of ritual abuse, well just getting free from the occult is a huge deal to the devil.

We are all under attack, for varying reasons, but as long as you are alive on this earth, the devil has you in his sights and you are enemy number one on his list. Some may doubt it, others may disagree, but the Bible makes it perfectly clear to us that trials and tribulations are not only to be expected but welcomed. The best way to handle the trials and tribulations of this world is through prayer and through renewing our minds with the Word.

The Word of God is the only truth in this world, and when we let it soak into our soul, it brings us a new sense of hope, encouragement, and joy. Some days I need to just repeat scripture out loud repeatedly to get through, and some days I receive joyous revelations that boost my confidence to keep fighting another day.

Here I have compiled a list of scriptures to help us not only understand the war in our lives but to be encouraged by it so we can continue to persevere.

Trials and tribulations are a normal part of this world and are to be expected.

  • “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
  • If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. John 15:18
  • Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. 1 Pet 4:12-13
  • As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful. James  5:10-11

Trials bring maturity and endurance and we are blessed by them

  • but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: by great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; 2 Corinthians 6:4-5
  • Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Romans 5:3-5
  • Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. James 1:2-4
  • Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. James 1:12
  • strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God. Acts 14:22
  • But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair;  persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;  2 Corinthians 4:7-9

We are looking to a heavenly reward

  • So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.  For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
  • The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. Revelation 3:21
  • For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. Romans 8:18

God is always with us and fights for us

  • Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:35-39
  • Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6
  • Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life. You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes; with your right hand you save me. Psalm 138:72
  • Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. Psalm 37:1-2
  • The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 14:14
  • The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. Psalm 34:7
  • So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you;  I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
  • no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me,” declares the Lord Isaiah  54:17

We have weapons of warfare not of this world

  • I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. Luke 10:19
  • Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only. Matthew 4:1-2
  • Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.  Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.  For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.  Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.  Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,  and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.  In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;  and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, Ephesians 6:10-18

We are a new creation in Christ and must remember our identity

  • Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. As God’s co-workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain. For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 5:17-6:2
  • Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.
    On the contrary:
    “If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:17-20

We need to have grace for those around us, remembering the real enemy is Satan

  • So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 2 Corinthians 5:16
  • “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. Luke 6:28
  • For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:17

Excellent article, I needed to hear this!

It reminded me of a favorite verse when I was a new Christian. It is a paraphrase version, but it got my attention then and now.

    Living Bible James 1:2-4
“Dear brothers(and sisters), is your life full of difficulties and temptations? Then be happy, for when the way is rough, your patience has a chance to grow. So let it grow, and don’t try to squirm out of your problems. For when your patience is finally in full bloom, then you will be ready for anything, strong in character, full and complete.”

Although, a paraphrase, I love that just like:

    Living Proverbs 5:23
“Above all else guard your affections. For they influence everything else in your life.”

When you are going through hard times the scriptures will surely encourage anyone as they have me. I needed this today, thank you so much for your post. I can continue to stand for God as I am strengthened by HIS word.

Thank you for these comforting strengthening words and scriptures. They came alive to me today. A young man who was close to us died today. I found your words to read and God made them real as I felt Him giving me peace and strength! Bless Him and bless you!

Thank you so much for all these scriptures. Much needed in my life right now due to ongoing trouble in my own life. I was beginning to lose faith and was already falling into unbelief. This reminds me I must stay in the Word even if I don’t “feel” like God is there. Much love and God bless!
